Stop entertaining tell them straight

It’s for sure not surprising to see the young people not interested in the matters of the gospel anymore. With Kenyan music industry elevating to high levels, the young people are finding it so appealing to listen to the beats and copy the dancing styles but not the message of the songs. There was a time I was really convinced that I want to be a local gospel musician, but with the likes of daddy Owen and jimmy gait as inspirations, then I think I will stick to my guitar playing.

Gospel music or rather Christian music is per say a song that talks of God and Jesus Christ. That might be a very general definition, but that’s basically how it’s defined here in Kenya, perhaps by the gospel songs composed. We have listened to songs like ‘ugali sosa’, ‘sudu’, kapungala and many others. These are some of the gospel songs we have in Kenya, the latest ones like furry furry being on top chats and most played songs in the gospel channels and programs.

I don’t want to start analyzing these songs because there is no need for that, truth be told, these songs don’t inspire the soul , don’t uplift the discouraged hearts, they don’t  draw us closer to God and for sure they would  not have convinced  me to desire salvation. Talk of the videos leave alone the lyrics, they are nothing but a show of. Fancy cars at the back ground, elegant beautiful dancers and colorful and eye catching clad, if you think am lying, go watch ‘igwe’ by the exodus.

It’s funny that when we want to listen to inspiring songs we still have to look for Michael w smith and the likes of hillsong, yet when we want to dance and show the latest moves in town then furry furry fits just well. Is that the purpose of these songs, dancing? Is that why we compose songs?  Which ministry is daddy Owen in, entertainment ministry? What is then the difference between him and nonini at this level? Jimmy gaits was a powerful worshipper, now he is singings song like muhathara and furry furry, to inspire who? Let’s not be blinded, open your eyes and ears and don’t make others rich as you go astray.

I have been observant when it comes to the open air commercials for the big companies. They are so keen to invite artists to sing for fame as they find market for their products. Secular musicians and gospel musicians sharing same plat forms, singing to the same fans for fun.  But what does that say about such gospel artists? They have no principles, just seeking awards, money and fame, without knowing they are forfeiting their souls to Satan and making ours lost.

Gospel is about Jesus and his works, it all about pointing people to the cross, directing lost souls to the light, but this is really not happening with our Kenyan gospel music. Some of the artists are not singing any sensible things, copy pasting the worldly view of doing things, dressing, shooting videos, just to be in the lime light and attain fame. I wonder if Jesus was a gospel artist in Kenya, if he will sing songs like ugali sosa and sudu. We have moved to entertaining  and not inspiring, we are trading into the devils ranks of entertainment and unfortunately that is what the fans want.

Am dreaming for a Kenya with true ministers of the word of God, be it in form of music or standing in churches to preach, ministers who have been chosen not just called, ministers who have a burden for lost souls, ministers who are not driven by selfish desire for fame and money. I desire a gospel music industry that will uplift and encourage, music that will draw souls to Christ and songs that will point souls to the cross. Big up for the likes of tony ouma, sankale, Eunice njeri, mercy wairegi and many others who are seeking for lost souls and directing them to the light in terms of music, God bless you big.

Do not allow your selves to be deceived, music is a very powerful tool, and once it’s inside your brain it results to different activities, what you feed into your minds determines how you behave afterwards. Let’s raise the standards of Christianity by leading the right paths, singing sensible things and having the right intentions as we do all these. Let’s all have the fire for God and desire to serve him in truth. Let’s offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God, for that is our spiritual act of worship, let us be changed by the renewal of our minds and will be able to apprehend Gods perfect will for us.
Let us wake up and journey on.
